SALFORD ART GALLERY: Salford, ‘Transitions’

SALFORD ART GALLERY: ‘Transitions’ Exhibition with Reveal Printmakers

Process of using etching for a series of work on Bexley Square, Salford for Salford Art Gallery Exhibition, 'Transformations', May-Sept 2019. Walking along C...

Reveal is a collective of ten contemporary artists who studied together and graduated from the three -year Complete Printmaker Course run by Salford’s prestigious Hot Bed Press Workshop. Over the last 5 years they have exhibited together at art galleries, shops and print fairs throughout the northwest and in London. For this exhibition they have made a new body of work that reflects aspects of the locality in which they are based. The title of the exhibition refers to two concepts: the use of printmaking to explore themes of space, memory, place and identity in an a rapidly changing urban landscape and the transformational nature that printmaking can have on the development of people as artists.

Artists’ Statement

“We were all very pleased at the prospect of producing a new body of work for a gallery that is so close to our hearts and to our adopted home - Hot Bed Press. It has challenged us to translate our very different responses to the rapidly changing city of Salford into prints and, in doing so, has inspired us to become more adventurous and creative. We recognise that our greatest strength is the diversity of our styles and subject matter and use each other to test ideas, get critical advice, tips, support and encouragement. Our philosophy is one of collaborative practice – working independently but together. This means that our art is no longer an internal conversation but becomes a fascinating shared experience and this gives us the confidence to experiment and pride in the collective result.

Over the last five years we have become enthusiastic advocates of an artform that allows practitioners to learn from each other. The impression of print on paper has a special quality. It is possible to achieve a range of textures, luminosity of colour and delicacy of line that occasionally adds together to make something wonderfully fresh and lively. In this exhibition you will see a range of print techniques used alongside tools, plates and materials that are used to make them”
