‘ENSO’ with Suzanne Bethell & Lesley Harry - Waterside Arts Centre

‘ENSO’ with Suzanne Bethell & Lesley Harry

Waterside and CIT are delighted to announce ‘Enso’ in Gallery 74, an exhibition of stunningly original works on paper that runs in parallel to One Year On in the Lauriston Gallery.

This exhibition will feature original prints and paintings from a trio of established artists, all of whose work is firmly grounded in expressive mark making, abstracted forms and beautifully judged colour combinations. The exhibition title, ‘Enso’, is the Japanese term for a hand drawn circle created with an uninhibited single brush- stroke. It is the expression of a moment when, for these women, the mind is free to let the hand create.

For this exhibition the artists have taken a fleeting idea, a journey, or series of marks, as the starting point for three different and complex bodies of works. Suzanne Beth- ell’s ‘Prussian Series’ is a subtle, mesmerising and immersive exploration of the col- our that can also be read as her homage to the Japanese aesthetic. Paulette Bansal’s etchings are carefully balanced compositions of shapes that interact via in- tersection, overlay and juxtaposition.

In contrast, Lesley Harry’s Edge Series of screen-prints are a bold, joyful experiment in colour combinations with more than a nod to Matisse in their graphic exploration of organic forms within the classic Japanese circle.
